The government on
Monday removed quota restriction on petroleum products that was imposed for
five months now since India’s trade embargo on Nepal. The decision means
motorists could get any amount of fuel while households would get full cooking
gas cylinder effective from Monday evening.
Before the decision,
Nepal Oil Corporation had been distributing 5 litres petrol for two wheelers
and 15 litres for four wheelers. Cooking gas cylinder was reduced to 7.1 kg.
However, the
government decision has raised scepticism over its capacity to supply fuel in
sufficient quantity as market is yet to normalise. “As imposing quota system
prompted people to hoard fuel, we have decided to lift the restriction,” said
Supply Minister Ganesh Man Pun at a press meet. “Amid complaints of rampant
black-marketing and hoarding of fuel, we have also decided to intensify
monitoring.”
